As a continuation of our series of recordings of José de Nebra's stage works, we will be recording his two Autos Sacramentales on September 22, 2025. These are small theatre pieces in one act that tell an allegorical story with arias, duets, trios, choirs and even a fandango. They were performed in Spain during Corpus Christi celebrations in the large squares or theaters and combined music with spoken texts in their structure. Calderón de la Barca (1600-1681) was one of the greatest exponents of this genre, and his works were still regularly performed well into the 20th century.
The two autos presented here were composed by José de Nebra (1702-1768) in 1745 (La divina Filotea) and 1751 (El diablo mudo) and combine the prevailing Italian style of the time with Spanish folklore (fandangos, traditional dances, castanets).
