Croaghauns at 688m are considered the highest sea cliffs in Europe are located on the western part of Achill Island. It overlooks the beautiful sheltered beach of Keem and has commanding views over Achill Island and beyond.
Its precipitous cliffs and dramatic corrie provides the perfect spot for an exciting mountain adventure.
During the hike we will visit the site of the tragic plane crash which occurred on the 16th June 1950 with the loss of 8 lives
The hike starts at Lough Acorrymore which provides the main drinking water for the island. We ascend to the SW top of Croaghauns and continue along the ridge to the main summit at 688m. At this point we stand overlooking the highest sea cliffs in Europe. From this vantage point we descend in a clockwise direction to complete the loop back to our starting point.
Difficulty level. Please note this is a demanding hike and only suitable for those with previous mountain experience.

Good waterproof boots and waterproof clothing are essential; hiking trousers are advised, (no jeans please); spare warm layer; hat and gloves; lunch and/or snacks; water or juice drink, (1.5 litres); small rucksack to carry it all in.
Walking poles are advisable and will provide additional support
