Join Tune Up! It’s a monthly practice group for anyone doing musical improv, whether you’ve taken one workshop, joined a class, or perform regularly.
You’ll get playful and gentle coaching from experienced peers and performers who love sharing what they’ve learned and cheering you on. Each session is a chance to share skills, try new things, and build your craft in a fun, low-pressure space where it’s okay to mess up. That’s how you learn!
Every second Saturday of the month with Highwire Improv, we meet to try new things, sharpen your skills, and build strong musical improv scenes with your teammates.
If you’re a coach or facilitator, you can practice leading and teaching the group. It’s also a great space to build your practice team or try out a new role in the group.
You’ll get to decide what to focus on with the group. Some days it’s song formats or group movement. Other times we dig into emotional commitment, listening, or long-form improv: storytelling scenes that build into something bigger. You’ll get feedback and tools to take your songs further with core skills like rhyming, openings, and song types.
At the start, we warm up all together with the Verse Chorus Song Workshop in one big musical community. At the end, we come back together again. You’ll share what you’ve been working on in a joyful mini-show for our beginner group.
First time trying musical improv? You’re welcome here too. We run a friendly intro-level improv song circle in a second room, at the same time and place. It’s designed just for first-timers. There’s a separate sign-up, so make sure you register for the event that fits. Bring a friend who’s new! We start and end as one group, so you’ll still be part of the full musical improv community.
Musical improv is like a game where you and your friends make up songs right on the spot. You don’t need any prepared lyrics or music; instead, you create them as you go. It’s a mix of acting and singing, where everyone collaborates to create fun and surprising songs that fit the moment.
It might sound tricky, but with the right mindset, simple guidelines, and a bit of practice, it’s easier than it looks. Think of it like creating a first draft—using patterns like adding a chorus and taking turns helps you shape your spontaneous songs.
This event is free, and any donations will go towards Baltimore Musical Improv (a fiscally sponsored non-profit organization)!
This workshop welcomes all writers, improvisers, songwriters, and musical theater enthusiasts—whether you’re into musical theater, pop, rock, folk, or any other genre. Just bring your enthusiasm and willingness to experiment with new song making games.
