The Jews in Music: A Musical Response to Rising Antisemitism
This powerful program reclaims and redefines a title once used to marginalize, turning Wagner’s infamous antisemitic essay on its head. The Jews in Music presents a rich tapestry of works by Jewish composers across centuries and continents—featuring the elegant sonorities of Salamone Rossi’s early Baroque Sonata, Gnesin’s evocative Variations on a Jewish Folk Theme, and the haunting poignancy of works by Hans Krása (Tanz), Dick Kattenburg (String Trio), and Gideon Klein (Duo for Violin and Cello)—all of whom perished in the Holocaust. The program culminates in Mendelssohn’s dazzling Octet, a work of youthful brilliance by a composer who, despite his success, was not immune to the antisemitism of his time. From resilience to remembrance, this concert is both a tribute and a testament to the enduring voice of Jewish composers in the face of hatred.
