Guided walk: the transformation of ex-arable fields - Dancersend extension, Saturday 21 June

Join Mick Jones to explore the remarkable wildlife refuge created over the last 25 years on ex-arable fields adjacent to Dancersend Reserve.

Join this expert guided field visit with reserve warden Mick Jones to find out how fields ploughed up at the end of WWII in order to grow cereals have been turned back into a rich chalk grassland refuge for rare plants and insects. Discover the approaches taken to recreate habitat for plants like Chiltern Gentian and Slender Bedstraw and butterflies like Small and Chalkhill Blues. Find out about the importance of excavating bare chalk scrapes and a new pond, the value of introducing some scrub and the rewards of collaborating with neighbouring landowners.
A walk at a gentle pace with frequent stops. Suitable for anyone with reasonable mobility, but some uphill and downhill terrain with rough ground. Stout footwear essential along with suitable clothing for the forecast. The Extension is exposed and can be very windy compared with the surrounding area.
