The presentation will include the following topics:
· Texas tax update including recent legislative changes
· Overview of multi-state income tax issues
· Discussion of multi-state sales tax issues including considerations for compliance
Speakers: John LaBorde (Baker Tilly), Gordon Martens (Martens Law), Kristen Scherer (Baker Tilly), Haleigh Finney (Baker Tilly)
John LaBorde is a Managing Director with Baker Tilly and has over 30 years of experience in state and local tax. His areas of expertise include state income and franchise tax and sales and use tax. He also has experience with credits and incentives and property tax. John assists clients with state tax audits, planning, refund reviews and state tax provisions. His clients include companies in the technology, energy, construction and service industries.
Gordon Martens is a partner with Martens Law, a Texas tax litigation law firm located in downtown Austin, Texas. Mr. Martens represents clients during Texas sales tax audits, in the State Office of Administrative Hearings, and in Texas trial and appellate courts. He has represented a wide variety of businesses with a focus on the energy, construction, and technology industries.
Kristen Scherer is a Director with Baker Tilly and has over 20 years of experience in public accounting. Her expertise includes sales and use tax transaction planning and compliance, including transaction structuring, determining product and service taxability, and creating tools to assist clients with sales and use taxes in daily operations. She also assists clients with nexus analysis and planning, voluntary disclosure agreements, state tax audits and appeals, and sales and use tax refund reviews.
Haleigh Finney is a Manager with Baker Tilly and she has helped clients navigate their sales and use tax compliance journey since 2018. She assists clients with their evaluation of sales tax compliance options, software implementations, and configurations. Drawing from her background in tax software implementation and product management, Haleigh guides clients towards automated compliance to achieve long-term efficiency and accuracy in their tax processes.
PARKING: Parking for Marten's Law is on the corner of 9th and Colorado. Please pull a ticket upon arrival and parking will be validated at the event. Once parked, you can enter the building through the glass door (on levels “4” and above) in the corner of the garage. Elevators are located to the left as you walk through the doors. We have reserved the Mockingbird Conference Room located on the 3rd floor. As a note, the parking garage will not accomodate large or oversized trucks.
