Join us at The Urban Farm for Sprout Scouts this summer! Kids aged 6-14 and their families are invited to become urban farmers for a day while helping us grow food for The Master’s Table Soup Kitchen. Here’s what you need to know:
Event 1: 5/20/25
Week 1 - Welcome & Soil Science
Icebreaker Game: "Garden Name Game" (each child picks a plant name) or we could use farm eggs and have sprouts name and decorate it. Make it their mascot for the day/all the days they have signed up. Kind of use it as a way for them to show off their personalities and interests.
Farm Education: Soil composition, compost basics, and worm bin demonstration
Craft: Decorate garden journals
Cooking Demo: Simple salad with farm greens
Legacy Art Project: Paint garden stepping stones and/or kindness rocks to be placed around the farm and TMT for guests

Week 2 - Planting Power
Farm Education: Seed anatomy and planting demonstration
Creative Play: "Seed Scavenger Hunt"
Craft: DIY seed bombs
Cooking Demo: Herb butter on fresh bread

Week 3 - Pollinators in Action
Farm Education: Pollinator life cycles and their importance
Creative Play: "Pollinator Tag/Water balloon battle" (kids mimic bees pollinating flowers)
Craft: Build bee hotels or butterfly feeders
Cooking Demo: Honey yogurt parfaits with farm berries
Legacy Art Project: Paint a mural of local pollinators

Week 4 - Harvest & Healthy Eating
Farm Education: How to harvest produce safely
Creative Play: "Harvest Relay Race"
Craft: DIY garden aprons
Cooking Demo: Veggie quesadillas using freshly harvested produce
Legacy Art Project: Design a recipe card featuring their favorite harvest recipe

Week 5 - Garden Wildlife & Ecosystems

Creative Play: "Insect ID Relay" game

Legacy Art Project: Construct a birdhouse for the farm

Craft: Decorate pots and plant herbs to take home

Legacy Art Project: Install their mural, steppingstones, and other creative projects at the farm
