AnglistenTheater of the University of Augsburg Announces Summer Production 2025: Euripides’
The Bacchae, a New Version by David Greig
The AnglistenTheater at the University of Augsburg is thrilled to announce its upcoming summer 2025
production: The Bacchae by Euripides, in a bold and contemporary adaptation by renowned Scottish
playwright David Greig. The performances in English will take place on June 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th at 8 p.m. in
Lecture Hall II of the University (Building C - Large Lecture Hall Centre). Tickets at €10 or €5 (concessions)
can be reserved from May 5 via a link on the AnglistenTheater’s website, and will be available at
Taschenbuchladen Krüger (near Königsplatz) from May 26.
David Greig’s compelling version of The Bacchae reimagines the classic Greek tragedy for modern audiences
while remaining faithful to its haunting core. First staged at the King's Theatre, Edinburgh, in 2007 in
association with the Lyric Hammersmith, Greig’s adaptation has been celebrated for its lyrical power,
psychological depth, and political resonance.
Greig is one of the UK’s most prominent contemporary playwrights. His works have been produced by major
theatre companies across Britain and internationally, including in the USA, Canada, Brazil, Australia, Japan,
and throughout Europe. This summer, the AnglistenTheater brings his electrifying text to life in a dynamic
student production that promises to challenge, provoke, and captivate.
At the heart of the play lies a confrontation between reason and ecstasy, control and liberation, order and
chaos. Dionysus, the god of wine, theatre, and divine madness, returns to his birthplace of Thebes to claim
recognition and reverence. When King Pentheus refuses to acknowledge Dionysus’ divinity and outlaws his
worship, the god exacts a chilling and transformative revenge. As the women of Thebes, the Bacchae,
abandon their homes to follow Dionysus into the wilderness, boundaries dissolve, and the city descends into
a dreamlike and dangerous state of unreason.
The AnglistenTheater invites audiences to explore these timeless themes through an immersive theatrical
experience that bridges antiquity and the present. With a passionate student cast and crew, this production
continues a long-standing tradition of English-language theatre at the University of Augsburg.
Founded in 1980 by English literature lecturer Rudolf Beck, the AnglistenTheater has brought over 50 plays
to the stage, showcasing everything from Shakespeare to modern drama. Still directed by Rudolf Beck, the
group comprises approximately 25 dedicated participants each season. From acting to set design, lighting,
costumes, and marketing, students collaborate across disciplines to create thoughtful and ambitious
performances.
As with previous productions, this summer’s The Bacchae promises to offer not only high-quality theatre, but
also a platform for creative expression and critical engagement with literature, language, and performance.
