“At Pōhutukawa Landing MetLifecare retirement village in Beachlands, there is a need for encouragement of creativity among the retirees. Although there are organised events these are mostly outings or things that don’t require any input from the residents. It’s always more difficult for the retirees to step outside their comfort zone and to make friends. By having an onsite art class the attendees don’t need to spend time travelling to and from a different venue. They form new friendships with other residents they would never otherwise have met, finding common interests and bonds, and thereby creating a step towards overcoming loneliness and depression. I have been asked if I could provide art classes there on a weekly basis.”
Linda attended life drawing classes at Hungry Creek Art School for two years. Initially she specialised in portraits of both people and animals, but now makes her living as an illustrator of children’s books. She enjoys the fact that being the illustrator gives her the freedom to decide how the book characters will look and what they will do. ‘A picture paints a thousand words’ they say, and the illustrator’s contribution is critical to the success of the book.
She sees the Art Collective Project as the perfect way to attract people from all areas within Auckland who would enjoy and benefit from developing a creative interest. Feel free to contact Linda on 021.825.960 if you are interested in participating in her classes.
