What lived on the Maltese Islands before the arrival of humans?
A new Heritage Malta publication, ‘Għar Dalam: A Window Into Malta’s Past Quaternary Faunas’, seeks to answer this enduring question.
The book will be officially launched on Wednesday 16th July at 7:30pm, in the enchanting courtyard of the National Museum of Natural History in Mdina.
This richly illustrated volume offers a comprehensive analysis of excavation records from the 19th century to the present day, covering all known fossiliferous sites across the Maltese Islands. It proposes a revised biochronological framework for Maltese faunal assemblages, some of which date back to the early Middle Pleistocene – extending Malta’s pre-human story to around 400,000 years ago.
At the heart of this research lies Għar Dalam, Malta’s most iconic prehistoric site.
Its sediment layers, likely spanning from the late Middle Pleistocene to modern times, are examined in meticulous detail.
The book presents a refined stratigraphy of the site, supported by a critical re-evaluation of past excavations.
The faunal remains from Malta are also compared with those from Sicily, shedding light on the Pleistocene faunal exchanges between the two islands and revealing both striking parallels and key differences.
During the launch, author Michael Gatt will highlight the key themes of his work in a 45-minute presentation in English. Those present will have the opportunity to purchase the publication at a special discounted price of €35 (regular price €45) and to have their copy signed by the author himself. A reception will follow.
Dress Code is smart casual.
Attendance is free of charge but pre-booking is required – either online or at any Heritage Malta museum or site.
The venue is wheelchair accessible.
