Robert Maloney’s mixed media work incorporates elements of the urban landscape, typography, topography and architecture. A recurring theme in Robert’s work is the visualization of a forgotten history that is no longer present. Robert reveals the residual traces of objects, individuals or places by showing the scaffolding, framework or footprint of what was.
Many of Robert’s pieces straddle the line between a structure being torn down and a structure being erected. He mines the vocabulary of the urban landscape to create imagery that evokes the feeling of crumbling walls, discarded billboards and deteriorated warehouse buildings. In Robert’s work, decades of imagery and information accumulate and deteriorate at various stages of recognition. He combines layers of found and created textures, screen-printed patterns, digital elements and three dimensional structures to create works that evoke the passing of time.
Robert received his BFA and MFA from Massachusetts College of Art and Design and is an Associate Professor in the Illustration department at Massart. Robert was awarded a 2022 Mass Cultural Council fellowship in Printmaking and has participated in two Illuminus Boston public art events. He has contributed to several Big Ink woodcut print sessions at the Dedee Shattuck Gallery and Boston Center for the Arts. In 2017 his permanent public art project repaired the missing signage on the chimney of the historic Haffenreffer brewery in Jamaica Plain.
