We are bringing our own form of a Newfoundland tradition called Mummering December 13th to the streets of Arnprior for some holiday cheer!
First off what is mummering?
Mummering is a tradition most popular in Newfoundland that dates back to the 19th century. People dress in costume close to Christmas and barge into their neighbours houses, to sing songs, tell jokes and cause mayhem until the hosts guess who the mummers are. At this point the host should then offer the mummers once revealed food and drink, until they head to their next house.
We are doing it a bit different
Instead of going from house to house, we will be encouraging people to dress in some level of festive mummering attire, and meet up at Cold Bear Brewing. From there we will have a few drinks, and people can have a guess on who's under all that disguise.
After an hour or so, we will then hit the road and march down the sidewalk spreading some holiday cheer as we make our way to the shop, where we will have a big fire going, and doing Bierstacheln, which is where you stick a hot rod in a lager beer to caramelize the sugars creating a tasty lightly caramelized lager perfect around a fire.
