About this Event

"Sculpting Concrete and the Art Deco Legacy" with Resident Artist, Andrew Barco

A Workshop @ the Innovation Studio / Monday, June 2 / 6:00-8:00pm

In overlooked nooks of major cities of New York, Chicago, and London, you can find traces of a revolutionary new take on architectural sculpture, the art deco concrete sculpture. We will use this early 20th century style to explore fun ways to manipulate concrete as a material, from body casting, rubber molds, to free hand sculpting. We will learn how to safely use variety of concrete mixes and additives to weave organic and geometric forms that are so recognizable in the sculptural style.

Make sure to drop in with enough time to explore and create-- at least 30 minutes .

About the Artist

Andrew Barco was born and raised in Durham, NC, and spent many years in Boston and Chicago before returning to the warmer climate of Northern Virginia. His work is concerned with the often strange and improbable ways ideas and .habits can be transmitted across cultural landscapes and through time. With an MFA in sculpture from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, he researches intellectual, cultural, and craft histories and takes his viewers on philosophical detours. He has shown his work in group and solo shows around the country, most recently in a solo show “Understory” at MocaArlington September 2023. You can find him as well every Saturday through the summer at the Reston farmers market selling sculptural kitchen tools.
