This is a new programs for the 2025 paddling season.
Program Overview
This program is designed for paddlers from the Great Lakes who are eager to transition from freshwater environments to the exhilarating and dynamic conditions of the Atlantic Ocean. Through this immersive experience, paddlers will gain essential ocean-specific skills, explore the stunning coastline of Nova Scotia, and build confidence navigating tides, currents, and ocean swell .
Program Goals
Transition Skills: Equip Great Lakes paddlers with the techniques and knowledge needed to safely and confidently paddle in ocean environments.
Explore Nova Scotia: Discover the rugged beauty, wildlife, and cultural heritage of Nova Scotia’s coastline.
Build Community: Connect with fellow paddlers who share a passion for adventure and exploration.
Safety & Confidence: Develop proficiency in reading tides, weather patterns, and navigation in a coastal environment.
Introduction to Ocean Kayaking
– Overview of ocean paddling vs. Great Lakes paddling
– Understanding tidal patterns, currents, and wind on the ocean
– Safety briefings: dealing with cold water, self-rescue, and group rescue techniques
Mastering Tidal Currents & Races
– Practical sessions on paddling in tidal races and eddies
– How to read and navigate tidal streams
– Dealing with waves and swell: techniques for ocean paddling
Navigating Open Waters
– Understanding marine charts and navigational aids
– Practice navigation with GPS and compass
– Journey planning with tides and weather forecasts
Building Ocean Confidence
– Advanced ocean paddling techniques: surfing, rock gardening, and rough water skills
– Group paddling strategies for safety and communication on the ocean
– Cold water immersion practice and dealing with variable weather conditions
Cultural Immersion & Coastal Living
– Experience Nova Scotia’s maritime culture: visits to local fishing communities, seafood, and storytelling
– Learn about the history and significance of the Bay of Fundy’s unique tides
Who is participating in this program?
Students must have Paddle Canada Level 2 Skills or equivalent to participate in this program. We are happy to chat with you in advance to sea if the program meets your needs and goals.
