NEW FOR 2025
Get ready for an unforgettable adventure in one of the world’s most exhilarating tidal zones! The Bay of Fundy Tidal Playground is a 6-day paddling program designed for experienced sea kayakers looking to push their skills to new levels. This demanding journey will take you through the tidal wonders of Nova Scotia, starting in West Pubnico, exploring the dynamic waters around Brier Island, and culminating with the thrill of paddling the Shubenacadie River’s famous tidal bore.
WHAT 2 EXPECT
This program is physically and technically demanding. Over six days, you’ll be paddling through some of the most challenging tidal waters Nova Scotia has to offer. To ensure the best experience, each participant will have an open conversation with Christopher Lockyer prior to joining. This discussion will cover your personal goals, current skills, and overall suitability for the program, ensuring you’ve chosen the right challenge for your growth and future development.
Be prepared to bring your A-game, but know that the journey will be unforgettable!
Program Overview:
Part 1: West Pubnico – Shakeout & Skill Building (Days 1-2)
Overview: We’ll kick off in West Pubnico, using the first two days as a “shakedown” to get back into our boats, review key skills, and establish a shared mental model for paddling in dynamic waters.
Activities:
Refresher on essential paddling techniques.
Group cohesion exercises for paddling in challenging tidal environments.
Initial exposure to tidal flows and current navigation.
Goal: Build a solid foundation, ensuring everyone is prepared to take on the more demanding sections of the program.
Part 2: Brier Island – Tidal Mastery at Gull Rock (Days 3-4)
Overview: The next leg of the journey takes us to Brier Island, where you’ll paddle through one of the region’s most exciting tidal playgrounds. Here, you’ll take full advantage of the powerful tidal features that form at Gull Rock during the flood tide.
Activities:
Open water crossings and advanced navigation.
Dynamic paddling through tidal races and eddies
Goal: Hone your ability to read and respond to tidal conditions, while pushing your paddling skills in more complex waters.
Part 3: Shubenacadie River – Tidal Bore Thrills (Days 5-6)
Overview: The final two days will be spent riding the world-famous Shubenacadie River tidal bore. This natural phenomenon creates a surge of water that flows upriver, transforming the river into a dynamic whitewater playground.
Activities:
Ride the tidal bore, navigating standing waves and fast-moving water.
Practice advanced boat control and decision-making in moving water.
Reflect on the week’s journey and celebrate your achievements.
Goal: Experience the exhilaration of tidal bore paddling and put all your learned skills into action in this high-energy environment.
