About the Workshop:
For this event, we will be at the Moka Pot cafe in Manchester!!
This will be a workshop hosted by Slam Free Or Die team member William James! It is free to get in, but feel free to toss a coin into the donation box, as we will leave it out at the front table!
Workshop Title: The Work Ethic Myth
What role does labor play in our art? How does the concept of "work" propel us forward? How does the capitalistic ideal of "work ethic" perpetuate our oppression, silencing us creatively, in our communities, and within our innermost selves. How do we feed the Poet in us, while surviving a world that demands everything and offers little-to-nothing in return? We will discuss this through a frame built of poems by Philip Levine, Jamaal May, and lyrics by the band Thou.
About the Workshop Host:
William James is originally from western Pennsylvania, but now calls New Hampshire their home. They are the author of "IF I FORGET THEE LOWCOUNTRY" (2021) and "rebel hearts & restless ghosts" (2016). Their work has appeared in Asterales, Booth, Forklift Ohio, Shore Poetry, and elsewhere. In 2025, they represented New Hampshire at the Midwest Mashup Poetry Slam in Minneapolis, MN & the Blackberry Peach National Poetry Slam in Albuquerque, NM. They swear they are trying, really.
Covid Safety Guidelines:
Our space is pro safety and pro vaccination. We encourage all unvaccinated individuals to wear masks during our show. We will have disposable masks available for those who need or would like one and hand sanitizer will be available throughout the space. We encourage everyone who comes to our show to take safety precautions necessary for their safety and health.
Accessibility Information:
The entrance to our show is at the back of the building with no stairs to enter the space. There is a ramp through the main bar for access to the ADA compliant bathrooms. For any other accessibility questions message our page or ask a staff member at the show.
About Slam Free Or Die - Poetry Open Mic & Slam:
Slam Free Or Die @ Stark Brewing Company is a series of open mic nights for poets and spoken-word artists every Thursday night in Manchester, NH. There is an open mic every night and poetry slams are also held several times a month. Doors open and sign-ups begin at 7pm with open mic beginning at 8pm. Featured poets and slams follow the open mic. Come and enjoy the delicious food and beverages at Stark Brewing Company! There is a $3-$5 cover charge.
