Join us for a Gallery Opening to celebrate a show of work by fibre artist LESLIE MCFARLANE called Whispers of Wool: The Art of Becoming.
The Opening is on Sunday, June 15 from 5:00- 6:00pm. All welcome! There will be light refreshments and a cash bar. The show will be up from June 10- July 8, 2025.
Leslie McFarlane – Artist Statement
My work as a fibre artist is grounded in the ancient and intuitive process of wet felting. Using wool, water, soap, motion, and time, I create sculptural and surface-based works that explore texture, transformation, and the expressive potential of natural materials.
I am drawn to the imperfect, the weathered, and the quietly complex. The philosophy of wabi-sabi — beauty found in impermanence and imperfection — guides much of my practice. Through the interplay of fibres, water, soap and motion, each piece emerges from a balance of control and surrender, shaped by both intention and the unpredictable nature of the felting process. The textures, organic forms, and subtle colour variations echo the natural world—its fragility, resilience, and quiet complexity.
Whispers of Wool: The Art of Becoming explores the interplay between this fragility and resilience. In my two-dimensional works, abstracted forms and layered fibre compositions invite reflection on cycles of decay and renewal. My three-dimensional pieces—vessels, sculptural forms, and wearables—exist at the intersection of functionality and fine art, tactile and grounded in the handmade.
As an adjudicated member of Craft Nova Scotia, I am proud to contribute to a broader community of makers. Teaching and mentoring have become integral parts of my practice, allowing me to share not only technique, but a deep appreciation for the meditative, expressive power of fibre.
Whispers of Wool: The Art of Becoming is an invitation—to slow down, to lean in, and to experience the intimacy and quiet strength held in each creation.
