Northern soundscapes to raw blues by adventurous duo.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
The duo of Finnish pianist Aki Rissanen and (bass) clarinetist Steven Kamperman was praised by the press as one of the most surprising acts at Transition Festival 2024. Their music takes the listener on a journey: from northern soundscapes through early music and playful folk dances to gritty blues. With a wink, they titled their debut album Thou shalt worship the rich and famous, a program full of modern commandments, each playfully introduced live on stage. Yet humor never overshadows the music, which carries the audience along on an exciting and emotional ride.
The virtuosic Aki Rissanen is a major name in Northern European jazz. He has worked with legends such as Dave Liebman and Verneri Pohjola and made a strong impression with his trio and solo projects. The versatile composer Steven Kamperman was aptly described by Trouw this year as a ‘wizard of tone colors.’ Rissanen and Kamperman met in 2023 and immediately discovered a profound shared passion for adventurous and inspired music-making. Two years later, their well-received album is here.
‘An adventurous result, with constantly shifting musical landscapes, subtle details, and almost telepathic interplay.’ (Jazzenzo)
