About RICE
The Rainbow Index of Churches in Europe (RICE) measures the inclusivity of churches towards LGBTI+ people. It is unique and gives both LGBTI+ people (of faith) and churches a highly informative insight in the ongoing process of inclusivity of religious communities throughout the European continent. The position of LGBTI+ people in churches from over 25 countries is measured based on 52 criteria organised into the categories of ‘institutional equality and non-discrimination’, ‘church practices’, ‘language and speech’ and ‘public policy’. An international team of prominent academic scholars built on the framework of the 1st edition of RICE (2020-2021), working closely with over 40 respondents/co-researchers from the field, knowledgeable about their churches and experiencing the lived reality of inclusion or lack thereof. Data from the 1st edition can be found here: www.inclusive-churches.eu. 2nd edition data will become public on 11 October 2025.
