In this workshop we will explore the vast spectrum of falling possibilities: rolls, slides, and spirals, focusing on the subtle art of recycling kinetic energy through refined techniques and heightened awareness.
Our movement journey will shift between structured techniques, open scores, and varied settings—solo, partner, and group work. This is an invitation to delve into the poetic potential of surrendering to and collaborating with the great forces of the Earth, engaging in a dynamic dance between control and release.
“Ukemi” is a Japanese term meaning „receiving body“ and refers to the art of falling safely and efficiently, a practice rooted in martial arts like judo and aikido. Beyond the act of falling, Ukemi cultivates awareness, balance, and adaptability, fostering the ability to recover and preserve oneself in dynamic situations. Its principles extend far beyond martial arts, offering insights into resilience and fluidity in both physical and mental realms.
In the context of Contact Improvisation (CI), the ability to „receive“ a fall opens the door to what I call the Kinetic State—an altered state of consciousness where the experience of „self“ dissolves into a seamless flow of kinetic energy.
