On Friday, October 24, 2025 at 7:30 pm at Trinity-St. Stephen’s United Church in Amherst, Music at Trinity is pleased to host the Symphony Nova Scotia Baroque Orchestra presenting a concert titled “Bach and Friends”.
Two more of Bach’s “Friends” and contemporaries were Georg Philipp Telemann and Johann Friedrich Fasch.
Georg Philipp Telemann (1681-1767)
Johann Friedrich Fasch (1688-1758)
Telemann was considered to be one of the leading composers of his time. He was a multi-instrumentalist and was compared favorably to Bach (who also made Telemann the godfather and namesake of one of his sons.) Almost completely self-taught in music, he became a composer against his family's wishes. But as his career grew he held important positions in Leipzig, Eisenach (where Bach also worked), Frankfurt before finally settling in Hamburg, where he became music director of that city’s five main churches! (Just think of scheduling all those choir rehearsals!) He remained at the forefront of all new musical tendencies, and his music stands as an important link between the late Baroque and early Classical styles. The Telemann Museum in Hamburg is dedicated to him.
Johann Friedrich Fasch started his musical life as a choirboy eventually studying at the famous St. Thomas School in Leipzig. Later in life he was invited to apply for the position of Cantor (more commonly known as its Music Director) at St. Thomas but he chose to withdraw his name from the competition. The Leipzig opening was eventually filled by JSB himself, who had considerable esteem for Fasch. Fasch studied composition and eventually held a number of court and church positions. His works included cantatas, concertos, symphonies, and chamber music, but none of his music was published in his lifetime and most has been lost. But according to sources, it appears that most of his instrumental music survived.
