6-6:30pm Community Share: each community group gives a quick 5-7 minute talk about their projects and work (like demo gardens, no pesticide campaigns, etc.) Option to share slides to project, or use a microphone on our mini stage. Groups include: West Newbury Wild & Native, Merrimac Neighbors for Nature, Amesbury Eco Gardeners, ACES and Pollinator Powerworks.
6:30-8pm Bee Green stickering: groups will apply the 6"x6" vinyl stickers onto repurposed yard signs. Conversations and connections will continue between our awesome local conservation groups!
Contact: Jenn Houle amVubmlmZXJsaG91bGUgfCBnbWFpbCAhIGNvbQ== to pre order Bee Green signs for your conservation group. Special thanks to BareWolf Brewing for hosting us!
Bee Green Pesticide Free sign: a 6”x6” yard sign that is the antithesis of the yellow pesticide application sign. The yellow pesticide application signs normalize and promote lawn spraying. The Bee Green flag inspires and normalizes natural no spray yards. I’ve noticed when one person sprays their lawn in a neighborhood, you’ll often see others follow suit. This sign is meant to inspire the opposite!
Fundraiser: The signs are a fundraiser for local conservation groups, and showcase our local network of grass-roots action by listing their names. The back of the sign directs to Xerces resource for alternatives to spraying lawns.
Design concept: A Common Eastern Bumblebee Bombus impatiens icon is featured, bumblebees are in decline in Massachusetts (along with all insects). The number of bumblebee species have dropped from 11 species to 7, with 3 of those 7 in danger of disappearing in the next decade if trends continue. (Mass.gov) Pesticides use is one of the main reasons. Bombus impatiens highlights the USFWS initiative to ‘keep the common species common’, a stark reality of where conservation is. Plus we are impatient for this change! Special thanks to Lance Hidy for his generous design feedback, helping to meet Universal Design standards and giving guidance to create a highly legible icon with clear text.
Cost: Contact amVubmlmZXJsaG91bGUgfCBnbWFpbCAhIGNvbQ== to pre-order. Payment via check to Jenn Houle or Venmo @JennHouleStudio Bulk orders of 20+ only please.
Materials: Two vinyl stickers to be applied on repurposed plastic corrugated yard signs with two 12” metal stakes. This is the most eco-friendly option I’ve brainstormed. I want to create signage to promote eco-friendly practices but not produce more plastic corrugated yard signs. Metal signs are a good option but too costly. The plastic corrugated signs are negative in the waste stream - repurposing them delays their negative impacts.
