Join us for a warm and spirited evening of jazz at its finest, led by two of Britain’s most engaging and expressive players, Alex Clarke (saxophone) and Phil Lucas (trumpet) as they revisit their roots with a programme steeped in traditional jazz.
Alex Clarke, a rising star in the British jazz firmament, has earned widespread acclaim for her deep respect for the bebop tradition, which she seamlessly blends with a fresh, contemporary sensibility. Her accolades include the 2019 British Jazz Awards Rising Star, finalist in the BBC Young Jazz Musician of the Year 2020, and a three-time Parliamentary Jazz Award nominee. Frequently compared to legends such as Phil Woods and Cannonball Adderley, Clarke’s melodic invention and expressive phrasing have made her one of the most compelling voices in British jazz today. Her acclaimed album Only A Year confirmed her gifts as both composer and bandleader, while collaborations with Alan Barnes and performances with the Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Orchestra underline her impressive musical range.
Sharing the front line is Phil Lucas, a highly melodic and lyrical trumpeter who has long been admired across the Northern jazz scene. Beginning his career with the Wirrorleans Jazz Band at Ma Boyle’s Pub in Liverpool, Lucas quickly developed a reputation for his warm tone and elegant phrasing. His playing spans straight-ahead American Songbook classics through to traditional New Orleans repertoire, and he has appeared at many of the UK’s leading jazz festivals, including Keswick, Upton upon Severn, and Pershore — notably with American pianist Jeff Barnhart and his 18–30 Band. Together, Clarke and Lucas promise a front line full of sparkle, interplay and authentic swing.
Supporting them will be the exceptional Andrzej Baranek on piano, whose tasteful, swinging approach complements the front line beautifully, alongside Peter Robinson (bass) and Roger Keay (drums) providing the steady, unshakable pulse that makes Alsager nights so special.
