Nate Hofer, a versatile artist working in design, music and photography, felt the long shadow of nuclear conflict at an early age. Growing up near De Soto, KS, there was a high value target just down the road – the Sunflower Army Ammunition Plant. This instilled a fear-induced fascination with nuclear weapons that subsided only when he attended the University of Kansas.
That dread returned to Hofer in the 2010s as he witnessed political tensions rising. With the skillsets he’d developed as a photographer and musician, Hofer met these anxieties with art. In Heartland Silos (Decommissioned), Hofer reflects on nuclear proliferation and offers a message of peace.
Along with Hofer’s photographs, Hofer’s solo pedal steel guitar album, "Decommissioned" adds a soothing element. The ambient sound was recorded in a decommissioned missile silo near Wilson, KS.
Join us on September 14th from 1-4pm for an opening reception of Heartland Silos (Decommissioned). At 2pm Hofer will share a presentation about his work and a pedal steel guitar performance.
Free admission. Light refreshments served.
