Summer Social – Midsummer walk from Alfreton Park to Craft
Join us for a midsummer stroll led by Tom Eskrine, from woodland project Craft Wood.
Starting off from Alfreton Park, the route will take us across to the Amber Valley on footpaths, picking up the Oakerthorpe Brook, then taking in Oakerthorpe Nature Reserve and Shaw Woods before crossing the River Amber and making our way up to Craft Wood. There's a couple of small uphills but nothing major.
Then a chance to enjoy the woods - and explore the site - its shelters, paths, fire circles, sculptures and views across the valley. We’ll share a cuppa around the campfire before heading back via the newly renovated South Wingfield Station and over the fields back to Alfreton Park.
If you’re keen to meet your neighbours and explore new places then this is for you!

Walk
We expect the walk will be around 1.5hours along footpaths. There are couple of small uphills on the way. We will take a slightly different, quicker route back.
Craft Wood:
Craft Wood is based in 12 hectares of woodland in South Wingfield. Access is via Inns Lane, South Wingfield, DE55 7LW
There's a compost loo, campfire area and several covered shelters.
Is there a toilet in the woodland?
Yes, we have the highest quality compost loo in Derbyshire! We also have an outdoor urinal built by Craft Work Club.
What clothing is suitable?
The track can get very muddy, so enclosed footwear or waterproof boots are recommended. As this is the UK, we always advise bringing a waterproof coat whatever time of year!
Is there any shelter?
Yes, we have several shelters which allow us to work, whatever the weather.
Do I need to bring food?
Yes, please bring a pack lunch with you and water.
We’ll provide a hot drink. If you can bring your own mug/ reusable cup for hot drinks
Is the site wheelchair accessible?
Regretfully, at present the site is not easily accessible for wheelchair users. Whilst vehicular access can be supported to the entrance, the site has a large incline and a 400m walk to access where activity takes place and the ground is very uneven.
We plan in future to put in infrastructure to be able to assist wheelchair users to access the site.
Can I bring my pet along?
Regretfully, due to potential allergies we discourage you bringing pets - unless they are assistance animals.
Will it go ahead if the weather is bad?
We will try and go ahead whatever the weather, if we can’t go ahead for safety reasons we’ll let you know.
Can I do you just one leg of the walk?
If you need to head off directly from Craft Wood rather than walk back to Alfreton, then there are buses from South Wingfield and/ or the option to be picked up from directly from Inns Road.
Space at Craft Wood is limited so booking essential
Also check out other Meetups in Alfreton.
