The New Mexico Museum of Natural History & Science will host an evening in celebration of the first American Woman in space, Dr. Sally Ride.To celebrate this year, we have a very special guest: Melinda Snodgrass, who wrote the award-winning Star Trek: The Next Generation episode "The Measure of a Man!"
The evening will include a screening of the iconic episode and a talk from Snodgrass about how science fiction mirrors real life. The museum's traveling exhibition Sci-Fi & Sci-Fact, which explores the ways that science fiction and scientific fact overlap and helped to create our modern world, will also be open for Sally's Night attendees to view. Additionally, Ms. Snodgrass will be available from 6:00 to 6:30 pm to sign her books.
This is a free event, with donations encouraged. Please register using the link the below as space is limited.
About Melinda Snodgrass: Melinda Snodgrass began her Hollywood career with Star Trek: The Next Generation where she was a script writer and series story editor. She has worked on numerous TV shows, written television pilots and feature films, and currently has two television series in development. Her novels include both science fiction and mystery. She writes for, and co-edits, the shared world anthology series Wild Cards with George R. R. Martin. She studied opera at the Conservatory of Vienna, and holds degrees in history (UNM) and law (UNM Law School). In 2021 she was the Screenwriting Guest of Honor and Keynote Speaker for the Life, the Universe, & Everything professional science fiction and fantasy symposium. For fun she is an equestrian who competes in dressage.
About Sally's Night: Sally Ride lived her life with extraordinary energy, passion, curiosity and joy. All astronauts lead exciting lives, but some are larger than life even before they reach for the stars. Whether in the classroom or on the tennis court, in the lab or on the launch pad—it was clear from the start that Dr. Ride would reach great heights.
In collaboration with the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum, each June we mark the anniversary of one exciting episode of Sally’s extraordinary life—the first night she looked back at Earth from space and experienced the special exhilaration and joy that energy, focus, and passion can bring to those who reach for the stars. Early interests and clear role models can lead to excellence in any field—particularly science, technology, engineering, and math, where not even the sky's the limit.
