On Sunday May 11, Naomi Keyte and Ryan Martin John are coming together for a special alt-folk show at the beloved Wheatsheaf Hotel.
Naomi and her band will play songs from her new album, Milk Paper Gold, as a part of a national album tour and Ryan will be joined by guitarist Tom Kneebone for an intimate duo performance.
A message from Naomi:
"May 11 is Mother’s Day but we’ll be there together as humans, and everyone is welcome. We don’t want anyone to feel excluded. I’m not a mum but I have a mum, and she had a mum. I might not have kids and that’s something I sometimes (often) find hard to grapple with.
I guess what I’m getting at is that we all have our own stories and narratives around parenthood, family, kids and what it all means to us at different points in our lives. Everyone and anyone is welcome to come together and celebrate, commiserate, or just be. We look forward to sharing our songs with you in one of our favourite venues."
Naomi Keyte is an award winning alt-folk artist based in Tarntanya/Adelaide, South Australia. She uses the vehicle of songwriting to explore multiple ways of connecting; connection to place, connection with others, and connection to personal and collective narratives. With intimate and detail-rich lyrics and gentle yet powerful voice, Naomi humbly offers up a truly beautiful set. Drawing inspiration from artists like Big Thief, Maple Glider, and Feist, she brings to life songs in a nuanced and singular way. There isn't anyone who sounds quite like this.
Ryan Martin John's brand of country/folk singer songwriting harkens back to a much loved era of late 60's/ early 70's Laurel Canyon singer-songwriters. Based on Kaurna land, Ryan is also an acclaimed record producer & engineer. RMJ's self recorded & produced 2023 debut record 'Goodness, Gracious, Graceless' was a visit to crunchy country folk ALA The Byrds/ Jackson Browne. The album saw national acclaim with nominations for National Folk Alliance Australia's Folk Artist of The Year as well as nominations for the Adelaide Blues and Roots Album of the year award and shortlisted for Music SA's solo Artist of the Year award. Ryan's sophomore record is shaping up to be much more minimal and acoustic ALA artists like Gillian Welch and the Milk Carton Kids, and will be debuting many of these tunes up close and personal along with acclaimed guitarist and all around good guy, Tom Kneebone.
