Wisdom Stories in CPD

I will first offer a justification for Continuing Professional and Personal Development (CPD) and discuss some forms it might take. I will argue that we need to go beyond updating knowledge and skills to the more profound human qualities which teachers need to develop. Such qualities cannot be directly taught but can be acquired.

I will then introduce the idea of wisdom stories, explain how they work and the way they can be used to spark discussion of issues for reflection. I will offer some examples of wisdom stories together with a framework for using them, including discussion prompts. In addition to wisdom stories, I will offer examples of using poems, quotations, metaphors, teacher anecdotes and critical incidents from books as lead-ins to critical discussion.
