York couldn't have developed without water. The trouble has always been when there's too much of it.
Join York's Hidden History during the 2025 York Festival of Ideas as we uncover the history of flooding in the city. In this city centre walking tour we'll visit the places that bear witness to York's historic floods - castles and churches, bridges and halls - and discover the stories they tell of how flooding has shaped the city over hundreds of years.
This guided walk is suitable for ages 11+ and begins outside the Yorkshire Museum in York Museum Gardens. The walk will last around 90 minutes, finishing in Hungate. The route is step-free, but some of the cobbled streets are not fully accessible.
If you are interested in York's Changing Waterscapes, there will also be a free, drop-in event in Rowntree Park during the Festival of Ideas. Hosted by the York Waterscapes working group of the York Climate Commission, it will run from 10am to 4pm on Wednesday June 4th, below the Rowntree Park Reading Cafe.
Also check out other Festivals in York.
