Join our Guilded Tour for a secret view of medieval York!
Starting and finishing outside the medieval Guildhall, our Guilded Tour of York's Hidden History uncovers the ancient secrets of the city streets. The walk lasts around an hour, and is a pay-what-you-feel event. Tickets are free to book on Eventbrite, and you can decide at the end if the walk was worth paying for!
After introducing York Guildhall and its origins, we'll walk down to the waterfront, to show how important the River Ouse was to the development of York. We'll then head off down Old Coney Street in search of holy hospitality, and sneak inside the Roman fortress to look for a long-lost tower, built into the city walls.
We'll then go from Mint Yard to the Minster, and learn how the fortress of Eboracum became St Peter's cathedral (and why no-one's quite sure where the earliest church was). Strolling down Stonegate, we'll seek out the snickelway that hides York's oldest house, and then we've got one final challenge before we get back to the Guildhall: what happened to the medieval water lanes?
The Guilded Tour is open to everyone, and follows a step-free route, though cobbled streets can always be uneven. Due to events often taking place, we don't normally go inside the Guildhall, but it's well worth a visit if you can.
