Shipbuilding capability has become a crucial component of sea power competition in the Indo-Pacific region, due to its vast maritime geography. Japan and South Korea are both major shipbuilding powerhouses in the region and are receiving significant attention from the international community. Then, what are the differences and similarities between the shipbuilding models of these two countries, and what lessons can be drawn from them for contemporary shipbuilding investments? In this Indo-Pacific Maritime Hor webinar, Dongkeun Lee, Policy Fellow at the Asia-Pacific Leadership Network, will explore these questions by comparing the development of the shipbuilding industries in Japan and South Korea and proposing a model for latecomers.

Dongkeun Lee is a Policy Fellow at the Asia-Pacific Leadership Network and has recently submitted his PhD thesis at the Australian National University. His primary research focus is maritime security in the Indo-Pacific, with broader interests in international relations within the region. He is also currently serving as a non-resident James A. Kelly Fellow at the Pacific Forum. His works are featured in various scholarly and policy outlets such as Marine Policy, East Asia Forum, and ORF Issue Brief.
