Dates: The Creative Catalyst Summer Vacation Program will run from Monday 12th of January until Friday 30th January
Schedule: Doors open 8:30 for a 9am start. Class finishes by 5pm, doors close 6:00pm
Healthy morning & afternoon teas are provided. Please BYO lunch, water bottle, sun hat & art making clothes.
Info: A diorama is a story in a box- our theme is an imagined magic study or shop with cupboards of potion ingredients and a little fireplace, shelves, perhaps piles of ancient spellbooks? Learn how to use a range of tools and materials to create your three dimensional story.
Info: Avast me Hearties- time to make a ceramic treasure chest fit to store all your precious secrets away from prying eyes! Learn how to build and carve clay into a sturdy box with a close fitting lid. Experiment using a range of clay carving tools and scrapers. Perhaps make some rare jewels to go inside your chest...Adorn your treasure chest with symbols and stamps and finish it with a golden glaze. All work will be fired in a kiln.
Info: Be inspired by ancient images of the Zodiac, choose your star sign and work on your own unique version to make up a vintage looking painting using pencil, shellac and watercolors. This design can then be used again on fabric and ceramics or you can look at designing your own collection of 12 symbols.
Info: Make your words art as you transform calligraphic drawing into sculpture. Blur the boundaries between writing and making as you model animals, vines, people and structures into the letters that will generate words. This ceramic workshop will allow participants to explore and test the limits of clay as they twist and shape it. The final touch will be the addition of colour as glaze decorates the formed letters. All work is fired in the kiln.
Info: Ocarinas are little clay whistles from Mesoamerica. They are ancient musical instruments that often take the form of animals or people. They can be highly decorated and ornamented or very simple and smooth. This class will teach you how to make whistles out of a lovely smooth chocolate coloured clay, they will be painted in slips and fired in the kiln,
Charm your family and friends with a set of homemade ocarinas!
Info: Clay is a great material for holding hot things like candles and incense. You can create little sculptures which use the smoke from incense as part of the design, for instance creeping from a dragon's nostrils or in this case the smoke from a little coal spirit. All work will be glazed and fired in a kiln.
Info: Clay is a great medium to express people's (and animals) personalities and individual characteristics; roll, squeeze and prod the clay into faces which you can learn how to make happy, angry, confused and more… This class is focussed on the head and learning how to create a work which will convey your desired emotions.
Info: Make music out of anything! Well almost anything, in this case boxes and containers that you will attach strings to. Work with musician Rai to create recycled music making machines, see if you can come up with a band as well!
Info: This workshop invites students to rethink familiar materials and capture a little of spring’s exuberance, in a dynamic mobile sculpture. Drawing inspiration from the work of Glass sculptor Dale Chihuly, and recycled materials sculptor Aurora Robson, students will create a hanging garden, from upcycled and new materials. Flowers, fruits, foliage and seeds can all feature here. Add birds, bees and some of the buzz and movement of the season.
Info: Disappear into an imaginative land of walking trees and speaking plants. Part costume, part sculpture learn how to use a huge range of materials; from lamp shades to yoga mats, and techniques, wire twisting, sewing and fabrication to construct your very own organic cosplay masterpiece!
Info: The art of Mapmaking is wonderfully illustrated in stories such as The Hobbit by J.R.R.Tolkien, The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe by C.S. Lewis and many others. These authors were also artists who brought their worlds to life with detailed and compelling guides to their imaginary worlds. Using a great range of waterproof inks, watercolours and metallic embellishing inks create a guide through your imaginary world.
Info: Mexico is famous for its beautiful folk art and its colorful adorned metalwork mirrors. Spend the day working with pressed metal, cutting, incising, stamping and dotting, to come up with a beautiful frame surrounded by animals, plants and other symbols. Colour with painted and rubbed inks to create an art work which will reflect beauty.
Info: Most people are familiar with the ever popular pinata, a paper mache animal or figure filled with sweets to be smashed open during the birthday parties of children. Pinatas are decorated paper mache containers in the shape of animals, characters or objects. They are popular in Mexico where an unlimited number of shapes and decorative finishes fill the streets with colour.
Make an artwork you’ll never want to smash!
Info: We’ll be going Old School in this workshop using pens dipped into ink to draw. Enjoy the nail biting experience of learning how to draw by pulling the ink nib down in the correct direction to avoid unexpected blobs- also find creative ways to incorporate your blobs into the images you are inking. Learn how to build up tone using cross hatching and linework. Have fun with white ink on black card. Try your hand at calligraphy- the art of decorative handwriting and even have a go at making your very own feather quill from a cockatoo feather. Old clothing essential!
