Chasing Light: A Night & Northern Lights Photography Workshop
Step into the beauty of the night sky in this immersive photography workshop designed to help you capture both the aurora borealis and the magic of nighttime landscapes. Whether you’re a beginner or an intermediate photographer, this hands-on class will guide you through the art and science of low-light photography — from starry skies to the elusive northern lights.
Workshop Overview
This two-part evening combines a one-hour classroom session followed by a field experience at a nearby farm:
Part One: Classroom Session
We’ll begin with an overview of key concepts and practical tools for successful night and aurora photography:
Where to Go: Learn the best regions and local spots for viewing the northern lights.
Tracking the Aurora: Understand how to interpret solar activity, KP index, and weather using tracking apps.
Gear Essentials: Get tips on choosing cameras, lenses, tripods, and accessories for night photography.
Camera Settings & Techniques: Master long exposures, manual focus, and composition strategies for low-light environments.
Part Two: Field Experience at a Local Farm
After the classroom session, we’ll head out together to a nearby farm*, far from city lights, to put your new skills into practice. You’ll receive hands-on guidance in a supportive setting as we shoot the night sky — and hopefully the aurora, if conditions are right.
Please note: The northern lights are a natural phenomenon and cannot be guaranteed. If they don’t appear during our session, you’ll still gain valuable experience in general nighttime photography — including shooting starscapes, silhouettes, and light painting — all of which will strengthen your confidence and creativity under the night sky.
*This class runs from 7-9 pm, the first part of the class is in the classroom at the Hallberg center for the Arts, and the second half will be at a nearby farm, and dark location. Please plan to provide your own transportation to this second location.
