About the event

Remarkable Romantics
Elgar's Cello Concerto and Mahler's 4th Symphony brought to the heart of Wrexham side-by-side with the Royal Northern College of Music

An evening of iconic and timeless music from the great Romantic composers Elgar and Mahler played by our virtuosic orchestra NEW Sinfonia joined by some of the Royal Northern College of Music’s most accomplished musicians and conductors.

Come along to hear the impassioned and profound sound of Elgar’s Cello Concerto performed by soloist Chloe Chen and the epic soundscapes of Mahler’s 4th Symphony with soloist and mezzo-soprano Clementine Thompson.

We are delighted to be continuing our partnership with the Royal Northern College of Music to provide emerging talent with the chance to conduct and play alongside our professional players whilst bringing high-quality performances to North Wales.

Clementine Thompson

South London born soprano Clementine Thompson is in her third year of undergraduate studies at the Royal Northern College of Music under the tutelage of Elizabeth Ritchie. As a soloist she has featured at the Wimbledon International Music Festival, with the Manchester Bach Choir and in recital alongside renowned soprano, Dame Emma Kirkby. She has been the recipient of numerous accolades during her studies most notably the Pamela Hart Third Prize at the Kathleen Ferrier Society Bursary Competition, alongside numerous RNCM awards and prizes at the David Clover Festival of Singing. Her role repertoire includes Belinda (Dido and Aeneas), Alison (The Wandering Scholar) and Bastienne as well scenes as Titania (A Midsummer Nights’ Dream) and Ora 2 (L’Egisto). A lover of contemporary music, she was privileged to originate the role of ‘Philosopher’ in David Bicarregui’s ‘Capsule’ last spring. This summer she is excited to be joining Waterperry Opera Festival as a Young Artist.

Chloe Chen

Chloe Chen is a cellist from Singapore and is currently studying at the Royal Northern College of Music under the tutelage of Hannah Roberts. As a solo player, Chloe has taken part in masterclasses by Qin Li-Wei and Bruno Philippe. In her second year of studies at the RNCM, she became one of the youngest cellists to be awarded the John Barbirolli Memorial Prize for Cello and was also awarded the Amy Lindley Prize for cello in her first year of studies. In Singapore, she was also awarded the Creative Arts Award by her Junior College and was a recipient of the Ministry of Education’s Music Elective Scholarship from 2021 to 2022. As an orchestral musician, Chloe was appointed as Principal Cello of the Singapore National Youth Orchestra from 2018 to 2022. She has also represented the SNYO in overseas concert tours playing in Guangzhou, China and Hong Kong. In 2024, she worked with Icelandic composer and Paralympian Mar Gunnarsson in recording an album for the Paris Paralymics 2024. She was also involved in the Songbirds Music UK project 2024 and is hired by an arts organization in the National Health Service to bring music into the wards of various hospitals in Manchester.
