Landscape and Letterforms Workshop

This workshop offers an opportunity to explore two artforms by combining aspects of a landscape painting with calligraphic lettering. It is suitable for those with just a little experience in either artform to more experienced artists and calligraphers.

The day will start with a welcome tea or coffee in the relaxed atmosphere of the Undercroft Learning Centre. The morning watercolour painting element of the course will cover how to experiment and simplify your landscape idea. You will learn skills of laying loose watercolour washes with some basic pencil drawing techniques and advice on materials. A range of landscape photographs and texts will be provided but please feel free to bring your own choices if you wish. There will be plenty of individual and whole group tuition throughout the day.

In the afternoon, the calligraphy element will demonstrate ways of transforming traditional Roman capital letterforms to create an informal contemporary style. Examples of several different styles will be available for your choice. One line of lettering is fine! Letterforms can be made using pencil only or calligraphic script pens and enhanced with colour influenced by your chosen landscape.

Tutor: Dr Elizabeth Beattie is a painter and Fine Art graduate. Elizabeth has a CLAS Advanced Diploma in Calligraphy and is an experienced tutor.
