This half-day course explores the mystery of self and the search for meaning. Drawing on both Western and Eastern perspectives—including Descartes, Buddhism, and existential thinkers—participants reflect on questions of identity, purpose, and life’s unfolding narrative. Through visualization, journaling, and values mapping, the session offers space to consider how personal experiences shape our understanding of who we are and what truly matters.
Suggested Reading: Man’s Search for Meaning by Viktor E. Frankl
Info: We explore different philosophical views of the self—from Western ideas of identity and memory to Buddhist teachings on non-self. Guided visualization helps participants reflect on their lives as unfolding stories. This is followed by reflective journaling and optional sharing in pairs or small groups.
Info: In the second part, we turn to existentialist views on freedom, responsibility, and meaning. A values-mapping activity invites participants to clarify their core beliefs and consider how these shape their lives. The session ends with a group discussion on what gives life meaning—and how we come to know it.
