Qaqsoss naka Wahantuhsis tells the story of Qaqsoss, a fox who runs away from a pack of wolves and finds herself in a dark, enchanted forest. There, she encounters Wahantuhsis, a tiny demon who follows her and disrupts her attempts to find peace. As Qaqsoss tries to survive in this strange, hostile environment, she builds traps, catches food, and learns to adapt to the forest's challenges. However, Wahantuhsis, though often destructive, seems to have a peculiar fascination with her, making her life increasingly complicated. Despite his mischievousness, Qaqsoss is forced to coexist with him, learning about her own mental struggles as well as the demons that plague her.
As the story unfolds, Qaqsoss and Wahantuhsis confront their inner conflicts in the form of a huge demon, representing Qaqsoss' own unresolved trauma. Through the film, Qaqsoss grapples with mental illness, depression, and the weight of generational trauma, themes deeply rooted in the filmmaker’s personal experiences. In the end, Qaqsoss faces her fears and confronts the demon, only to realize that the true enemy is within herself.
The film offers a powerful reflection on survival, resilience, and understanding the pain of others, set within an Indigenous cultural context. Told in Wolastoqey, Qaqsoss naka Wahantuhsis is a poignant allegory for anyone struggling with their own personal demons and the complex process of healing.
