A New Wave in Space – Spaceflight in the 1980s

A totally awesome presentation from Andrew Lound – written especially for Perton Library!

The 1980s brought us wide shoulders, economic expansion based on free trade and outsourcing. The USSR-USA rivalry was reaching its peak. New technology was becoming mainstream with games consoles, video recorders, lightweight cassette players, electronic music, mobile phones and the first home computers.

In space the Voyager space probes would beam back new images of the outer planets, Halley’s comet returned, and the age of the space shuttle began, a new system to take astronauts into orbit to launch and repair satellite, to carry out research and be used to build a space station.

The decade of the 1980s promised much and this presentation takes the audience through the dramatic space programmes against the background of political change, with the new wave music and images of the eighties.

Put in those shoulder pads, roll up your jacket sleeves and take a trip back to the new wave.
