There have been hauntings at the site for a long time, and the castle staff won't leave some parts of the building alone. This reluctance to explore certain areas of the castle stems from a deep-seated fear and respect for the spirits that are believed to linger within its ancient walls. The staff members often report strange occurrences, such as unexplained noises echoing through the halls, sudden drops in temperature, and the feeling of being watched, especially in the more secluded and shadowy corners of the castle. These experiences have led to a collective belief among the staff that some areas are best left undisturbed, as if the very atmosphere is charged with the energy of those who once walked the halls.
Dating back to the mediaeval era, the spooky and dark vaults are a complex system of underground passageways that have served a variety of purposes over the centuries, including their notorious use as a prison. Wisbech Castle, also referred to as "The Castle of Nightmares," gained notoriety for imprisoning Protestants throughout Queen Mary's reign, a time marked by religious persecution and turmoil. The castle did not discriminate in its dark history, as it also held Catholics during the reigns of Elizabeth I, James I, and Charles I, reflecting the turbulent political and religious landscape of the time. Numerous individuals, many of whom were innocent of any wrongdoing, faced harrowing conditions within these walls and were subjected to brutal treatment. The castle's dungeons became a place of despair, and countless people were put to death, their lives extinguished in the name of faith and power.
It's also suspected that the Castle is where the Gunpowder Plot was conceived, a conspiracy that aimed to blow up the House of Lords and assassinate King James I. This historical connection adds another layer of intrigue to the castle's already chilling reputation. The very stones of Wisbech Castle seem to whisper tales of betrayal, treachery, and the desperate measures taken by those who sought to change the course of history. As visitors and staff alike traverse the castle’s grounds, they can almost feel the weight of the past pressing down upon them, a reminder of the lives once lived and lost within these formidable walls. The combination of its storied history and the eerie tales of hauntings creates an atmosphere that is both captivating and unsettling, ensuring that Wisbech Castle remains a focal point of fascination and fear for those who dare to explore its depths.
The castle was purchased and rebuilt using its original materials after falling into disrepair in the 1600s. Wisbech Castle remained in the possession of the same family for over a century.
During your overnight ghost hunt at the castle and vaults, you will explore in small groups, attempting to witness the paranormal phenomena, which reportedly include mysterious mists, objects moved by unseen forces, children's voices, dark shadows, and chilling screams. Deep within the vaults, many choose not to linger as the suffering and sorrow of the imprisoned become evident. We shall say no more!
