About the event

Freedom Day at Old Salem
On May 21, 1865, the Chaplain of the Ohio Cavalry announced to the congregation at St. Philips Afro-Moravian Church that slavery had been legally abolished—they were free.

Join us as we honor this historic moment with district-wide programming centered on Black history, emancipation, and community resilience.

Included with regular ticketed admission:

- Themed interpretation across the historic district

- Hands-on activities at multiple locations

- Guided walking tours at 11:00 AM and 2:00 PM (meet at the Heritage Bridge in front of the Horton Center)

- Encore walking tours on Saturday, May 24
