On Friday, September 5th at 2pm, Joleen Emery from Big Raven Farm will host an exciting and eco-friendly workshop on creating a beautiful handmade journal made from discarded books at the Winona Public Library. Registration is required. To register, go to
https://winona.lib.mn.us/event/handmade-journals/. Participants will learn the art of transforming old, unloved books into unique, personalized travelers’ notebooks. Whether you’re a seasoned crafter or new to bookmaking, this workshop is perfect for anyone looking to explore their artistic side while making a positive impact on the environment.
The class will start by reinforcing and covering the book, ensuring it’s sturdy and ready for creative touch. Then participants will learn how to sew signatures, those essential bundles of pages, to craft the interior of the journal. Participants will then cover the book with fabric, adding a tactile and visual element to the creation, and will reinforce the spine, set eyelets for a professional finish, and incorporate decorative closures. The pièce de résistance will be a stunning mosaic on the cover, made from precut recycled book board, allowing attendees to add a unique, artistic flair. By the end of the class, participants will have a one-of-a-kind travelers’ notebook that reflects creativity and commitment to sustainability.
This program is free and open to the public and brought to you by both SELCO and the Minnesota Arts, Cultural, and Legacy Amendment. Fore more information on Library Legacy funding, and a complete schedule of Legacy-funded events in the region, visit
