Speaker: Katrín Níelsdóttir
Topic: History of Icelandic Publishing in Manitoba
Katrín Níelsdóttir is a librarian, editor, and cultural heritage researcher specializing in Icelandic-language publishing and archives in Manitoba. She serves as Assistant Librarian at the University of Manitoba, where she is responsible for the Icelandic Collection and works closely with communities, researchers, and cultural organizations.
Katrín is the co-creator of the Digital Museums Canada–funded exhibition Preserving the Most Precious Heirloom – Icelandic Language Publishing in Manitoba, a trilingual digital museum exploring the history and cultural significance of Icelandic print in the province. Her work brings together archival research, translation, digitization, and community storytelling, with a strong emphasis on access, collaboration, and care.
She is deeply passionate about community-engaged archives and ensuring Icelandic print history remains living, accessible, and meaningful. Outside the archives, Katrín is also a Level 74 Pokémon GO trainer, which she considers excellent preparation for long walks, patient research, and spotting rare finds.
