The Art Gallery: “Fire and Ice” by Bob Keefer

The Art Gallery at Umpqua Community College presents “Fire and Ice,” by Bob Keefer. A selection of hand-painted photographs exploring the strange beauty of climate-driven devastation in the forests of western Oregon will be on display.

Additional Info: “I am a late-life emerging artist who grew up in the American West. Using a traditional medium — hand-colored black-and-white photography — in a contemporary way, I have explored subjects such as the persistence of old-growth stumps in the Northwestern rain forest and the role of tourism in shaping our relationship with the land,” said the artist, Bob Keefer. “My work stems from a fascination with the interplay between the cool, Modernist medium of photography and the more personal, tactile nature of painting. I create my hand-colored photographs the old-fashioned way — without Photoshop — using paint and brushes on black-and-white prints.”

About Bob Keefer: Writer and photographer Bob Keefer graduated from Harvard University in 1975 and spent nearly five decades as a newspaperman before retiring in 2024 to turn his attention to landscape and nature photography. He wrote about art and artists for most of the 30 years he worked at The Register-Guard in Eugene, Oregon, produced an online blog about the arts in Eugene for three years, and served as arts editor of Eugene Weekly from 2017 to 2024. In 2006 he was a fellow at the National Endowment for the Arts’ Journalism Institute for Theater and Musical Theater in Los Angeles.
