DSO Opening Night isn’t 𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁 another concert — it’s our kickoff, the landmark launch of our 120th season that bursts to life as Michelle Di Russo steps to the podium for the first time as your new Music Director!
As the house lights go down, the hall’s energy goes up, and from the first notes, you’ll know you’re in for something truly special. This first concert of the season is all about energetic celebration and pure musical adrenaline.
First up, Gabriela Ortiz’s 𝘈𝘯𝘵𝘳𝘰́𝘱𝘰𝘭𝘪𝘴 drops you straight into a neon-lit club amid the colorful background of Mexico City’s nightlife. And what a start — driving percussion, blazing brass, and twisting rhythms that make you feel like you’re vibing with the heartbeat of the scene itself.
Next, Rachmaninoff’s Third Piano Concerto brings the fireworks. The artistry of guest pianist Fei-Fei is front and center — soaring melodies, jaw-dropping runs, and moments that hit. The Musicians of the DSO accelerate the ride, making the whole piece feel like an epic movie in music form.
Tchaikovsky’s Fourth Symphony closes the evening like an emotional rollercoaster — big, dramatic, unapologetically emotional. At the start, the music grabs you with intense blasts of brass, then the music swings between stormy passages and tender, even hopeful moments. The finale is loud, energetic, and full of sonic firecrackers, as if Tchaikovsky is trying to drown out the ‘dark stuff’ with sheer joy and excitement.
Clearly, Michelle Di Russo and the Musicians of the DSO are setting the tone for an unforgettable season.
