This new book marks the 70th anniversary of Dounreay and concentrates on the social history of the site, featuring recollections of workers and people of the local community. The book highlights the impact of Dounreay within both a local and national context.
Iain Grant and James Gunn will introduce the new book and give an introductory talk about the research and ideas behind it. There will then be a chance to ask questions and purchase a signed copy. The softcover book costs £17.99. A card machine is being arranged for payment, but please try and bring cash where possible, just in case!
This will be followed by a special display of archives within the searchroom focusing on Dounreay. The display will showcase some of our collection highlights, including many that feature within the book.
As always there will be tea, coffee, biscuits and a chance to catch up and reminisce.

The DRG is a collaborative project run by Dounreay and Nucleus: The Nuclear and Caithness Archives. Over a two hour session, once a month (Oct-Mar), participants are shown photographs from the vast nuclear photographic archive. Archive staff will be on hand to capture any information relevant to the photographs as well as anecdotes and stories. This precious information will then be incorporated into the descriptions of the archives at Nucleus, meaning that future generations will benefit from both technical and social insight into Dounreay’s past.
This year we also included bespoke talks from the Young Generation Network at Dounreay, allowing ex-employees to hear about ongoing work on site.
