Local historian Darryl Claassen will present, “The Claassen-Thiessen Family,” at the Frederic Remington Area Historical Society meeting on Monday, October 6 at 7:00 p.m. at the Centre Point Church, 212 S. Main, Whitewater, Kansas. Admission is free.
In 1876, Dietrich and Maria Claassen arrived in Butler County, Kansas. They were accompanied by their immediate family of six sons, one daughter, and one daughter-in-law. They set about purchasing land and establishing farm steads. This family initially settled on Sections 29 and 33 of Milton Township – an area south of the future towns of Brainerd and Whitewater.
A few years later, in 1888, Heinrich Thiessen brought his young family to the area. He was able to purchase three quarters of Section 10 of Milton Township, north of the new town of Brainerd. Claassen will present a history of these two families and how their relationship impacted his existence. Claassen will also tell how he is almost related to three other Claassen clans.
The Frederic Remington Area Historical Society (FRAHS) is a membership organization and not-for-profit corporation, filed June 21, 1978. This corporation is exempt from federal income tax under 501(c)(3) Revenue Codes of 1954. Membership runs from September to May; dues are announced at meetings.
The primary purpose of FRAHS is to collect, preserve, and share the Frederic Remington USD206 School District area’s rich history and culture with its residents, students, and other interested persons. A majority of the society’s programs each year are to fulfill that purpose, while other programs should inform attendees of state and national topics of historical and cultural interests. All are welcome to attend.
