She is an icon, a national treasure, and one of the most recognizable figures in the world. Each year millions who cherish her ideals make the journey to experience her history and grandeur in person. She is the Statue of Liberty, a symbol of freedom, inspiration, and hope.
It was 1865 when Frenchman Edouard Laboulaye proposed the idea of presenting a monumental gift from the people of France to the people of the United States.
Sculptor Frederic-Auguste Bartholdi was in attendance for Laboulaye’s proclamation. Of like mind, Bartholdi began conceptualizing the colossal structure that he called, “Liberty Enlightening the World.”
Turning Bartholdi’s sculpture into reality took 21 years. French supporters raised money to build the statue, and Americans raised money for the pedestal it would stand on. Finally, in 1886, the statue was dedicated.
