Dear neighbors and Coop members,
Snow Buntings have already been spotted in the Upper Valley this season! Whether you follow the Upper Valley Birder’s ListServ, are on local Birding GroupMe chat, or just follow along on eBird to keep track of what species are in town- the leaves may be gone but the snowy season has lots of interesting birds to look for. To help folks get ready for winter birding, the Downtown Documentary Club is meeting December 11th from 7-9pm to watch the brand new and hugely popular documentary: “Listers: A Glimpse into Extreme Birdwatching.” We’ll also be talking about the annual Christmas Bird Count, a giant annual community science project (that can be a solid introduction to the hobby of birding), which starts next week.
Listers was made by Owen and Quentin Reiser and released free for the world to watch on Youtube. So with that said, while a number of local birders will be at the meetup to share hotspot recommendations and recent sighting stories, feel free to watch this one on your own! In their early 20s, the two brothers are exceptionally charismatic and welcoming guides eager to introduce the wild world of Birding. If you watch “Listers” with your family this holiday season, everyone is guaranteed to share a laugh, plus you’ll likely end up in an extra book store or two all together in a quest to obtain some Field Guides to New England Birds.
The Downtown Documentary Club generally meets to watch a recent film to help us explore a local cause or project that attendees can potentially get involved in. Last month, the Upper Valley Haven’s Volunteer Coordinator Ella Hutchinson and acclaimed VT filmmaker Corey Hendrickson came out for an especially poignant meetup, and we all learned about local food security programs and different ways folks can volunteer and support the Haven community. This month we’ll have some conversation about how the hobby of birding can help to collect important data to inform conservation of different species - in the Upper Valley we’re lucky to have so many bird-friendly organizations nearby, like the Vermont Center for Ecostudies, Upper Valley Land Trust and Vermont Institute for Natural Sciences that all support avian research and conservation in one way or another. “Giving Tuesday” already happened this year, but if you’re looking for a place to donate locally, Documentary Club is often a great opportunity to meet some potential candidates in person.
