Denman Wildlife Refuge: Floodplain Exploration along Little Butte Creek

Little Butte Creek is a major fish-bearing stream and tributary of the Rogue. It has many water quality impairments in the summer. This walk will be along a trail in the Little Butte Creek floodplain and riparian forest in Denman Wildlife Area.

We will discuss the importance of complex and diverse riparian habitats, spend some time doing some birdwatching, and visit a channel restoration project that was completed in 2011. Floodplains and their associated riparian areas are important functional landscapes that protect water quality.

This will be a natural history walk: we will discuss the functions and threats to floodplains, water quality concerns in Little Butte Creek & the Rogue River, and we will do some basic audio and visual birding and botanizing.

These educational events are free and great for people of all ages.
