Join us on 8th October as we celebrate the 210 remarkable years of Whitchurch Silk Mill.
Over the past 18 months, one of our historic looms has been undergoing an extensive conservation journey, led by Industrial Conservator G&H Spender. Now, as this meticulous project nears completion, anticipation is building for the moment Loom 10 throws a shuttle across once more.
Its first new warp will mark more than a return to motion; it will weave a story of history, resilience and craftmanship. Designed by the talented Lucina Carlos of London Metropolitan University, this Limited Edition silk celebrates the Mill’s remarkable 210-year legacy. ‘A Final Strike’ is inspired by the Battle of Waterloo in 1815 and pays homage to the legendary Waterloo clock that has been at the heart of the Mill for over two centuries.

Whitchurch Silk Mill stands as a beacon of British Industrial Heritage. More than a mill – a living museum too, preserving heritage machinery and keeping critically endangered crafts alive. The recent design competition at Whitchurch Silk Mill, made possible by funding from the ‘Weaving Futures’ National Lottery Heritage Fund project, is a brilliant example of nurturing new talent while preserving historical craftsmanship. By offering London Metropolitan University students invaluable industry experience, the Mill has opened its doors to a wave of creativity from a vibrant team of young designers. Drawing inspiration from military medal stripes and the Mill’s extensive stripe archive, Lucina Carlos crafted an initial design concept rich in history and meaning.
